RE:Visiting

I have recently been noticing a lot of revisiting...maybe it's been going on forever, but I am just now becoming keenly aware of how, as a society, we are becoming second guessers.  I know that revisiting has many Purposes, checking to see that the original plan is still viable, maybe it's a budget thing, who knows, but whatever the reason we certainly do a lot of it.

It makes me wonder if we have lost sight of the core of that word.  In this socially stunted, media fattened, electronically driven society, do we really Visit anymore?  When was the last time you dropped by a friends house and had a cup of tea or made a lunch date with an old high school friend is back in town.

There are a few folks I miss visiting.  Certainly family that is no longer here, though I still visit with them, truth be told.  I grew up in an idyllic neighborhood of large cul-de-sacs, I had dozens of moms and dads.  Everyone's house was open for business...visiting was just second nature.  I think I need to get back to that and RE:Visit some old friends.  I would like to think that is truly the meaning of the word.

Peace,

Lindsay

RE:Marrying

As promised there is news to share.  I am getting married in a few weeks to a man who is one of the good one's.  I am not sure if I like this RE:  Not the man or the act, but the word remarrying.  I may be technically doing something again I have done before, but I am not repeating the first marriage.  So I guess I will dwell on the other RE: I adore, the "about" part.  For this wedding is about moving forward, leaving the past with the past.  The first sentence out of Jim's mouth when he proposed was "We cannot let our pasts dictate our futures."

How ironic it is for someone who RE:Purposes the past to leave one behind....

Enjoy your Springs as we emerge from our Winters.....

RE:Membering

One of my best friends just suffered the loss of his mother.  An event that I went through a little over a year ago.  I have had time to heal, reflect, cry, laugh and remember.  He will have this time come to him too.  His mother, another mom and my mother were all best friends and they had been since he, my other best friend and I were 5 years old, all the moms, were all our "other mothers", they were like an exclusive but all inclusive club to which membership was precious.  So when his mom passed it hit me, it hit me hard.  It has taken me a week or so to figure out why.  There is only one "other mother" left.  The safety net of being able to bury your head in a moms arms after a hard day or laugh with when you hear a funny story was reduced by another third.

We three kids, more than our younger siblings, have always stayed close.  We may not have lived next door anymore, but we were always just a phone call away.  I guess you could say we are our own exclusive, but all inclusive club too.  It's funny the word remember, its core is as if to say becoming a member again...and it's true.  When we remember we admit a thought back into our conscious, into our collective current thoughts.  I also like to think memories when brought back are being reinstated into an exclusive club.  I also like to think that as these wonderful women pass on to the next life and  we remember them, they are being RE:Membered into their exclusive, inclusive club.  I believe my friends and I have a club to form.  Take a moment and RE:Member someone.

Three of us.....

Holiday Travels

The Purpose of traveling cannot be summed up easily as we all have so many reasons to do so. I am currently traveling through Pennsylvania, via our lake house, on the way to Florida to visit family. Florida is not my first choice for Christmas, but we all know the true meaning of the holidays is compromise. We are visiting my man's 82 year old mom, whose purpose in life has been helping the mentally ill, a fine Purpose indeed. One of the things we will enjoy doing together is visiting the local junk, vintage and antique stores, a hobby/passion we both share. She RE:Purposes things for different reasons than I do, but a RE:Purposer nonetheless. So as I have previously blogged RE:Gift and REjoice this holiday. Talk to you next year!

Tis The Season of RE:Gifting

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa and of course Happy Holidays.  I can remember when it was so uncomplicated.  Wishing someone happiness and joy was never ill received ans the intention was never ill intended.  This time of year causes so many to reflect upon so many things, but it saddens me that we do not reflect enough.  We are just so caught up in the retail frenzy of giving.....

I encourage you, this and every season, to re gift.  No, not the ugly tie from the grab bag at work, or the undrinkable bottle of wine from your long lost cousin.  I mean go to your local antique/vintage shop or second hand store and give an item a new lease on life.  I have found vintage engineering books and old tools for an Engineer in my life, vintage cookbooks and Corningware for a cook in my life, fun things, serious things, just things of all kinds.  Don't get me wrong, I won't turn down a thoughtful gift from anyone....but those who really know me....know where to shop.

Peace........

Mother Nature

Ah, the beauty of purpose!  Everything in life has purpose, even the things that we cannot predict, see or understand.  Such is the way of Mother Nature.  My last post reflected feelings about Halloween.   I look forward to the day every year.  But, alas, Halloween was not to be in Connecticut, as an early Nor'easter roared through causing nearly a million people to be without power; some for up to 10 days.  However, this is not a statement regarding utilities, but rather RE:Purposing.

The bad news was we lost some beautiful old growth trees, the good news is they will be RE:Purposed into firewood and will help ease utility bills next year.  The bad news was we were without power, the good news is neighbors came out and helped each other all while RE:Purposing things in their homes, car batteries became means of power, re gifted (I prefer RE:Purposed items) became sources of heat, entertainment and light.  We RE:Purposed out fireplaces into ovens and created vintage, rustic meals to warm us.  We RE:Discovered the fun and joy of reading by candlelight, forgetting why electronics were so important.  We found the Purpose of each others company without the noise of our modern society and we saw stars for the first time in a long while.

So, before the storm comes, practice.  Practice the wonder of quiet, peace, each other, books, calm and a nice fire.  You may not want to go back to the noise....

Peace.
